Adolescence- transitional state?

Adolescence

"Becoming an adult means leaving the world of your parents and starting to make your way toward the future that you will share with your peers," writes Alison Gopnik for The Wall Street Journal. "Puberty not only turns on the motivational and emotional system with new force, it also turns it away from the family and toward the world of equals."

Throughout this unit, you will reflect on the journey of adolescence. Your work will result in a portfolio , a collection of assignments with a final reflection. I will check that you've finished assignments but your final mark will happen at the end of the unit. Please keep track of your work!

Opening- Assignment #1 – leaving childhood behind

Journal about the moment you left childhood behind...was it physical, emotional, a cognitive realisation or perhaps, even a changed perception from people around you.

What did you lose and what did you gain? How did that moment make an impact on your identity now as you walk the path of adolescence? Please write a reflective, thoughtful paragraph.

Theories of Adolescence - the transitional stage- Assignment #2

Consider the list in your textbook, as described by Havighurst, the challenges that every adolescent faces in the form of developmental tasks that must be mastered before entering adulthood.
Do you agree or disagree with the list?
Now, think about your reality, in the 21st. century. What do you need to know now and in the future? What are kids concerned with now. What do you need to know and master before reaching adulthood?

Reflection!!!

After some reflection,  I've decided to shift around our class.
The visit from tiny & precious people has been moved from today to next Monday.
I wanted you to finish the child development project first, and then see the munchkins in action.

I've also decided to omit the article summary and add a planned activity for next Monday.  So, in groups of 4- 5 , please plan an activity for our guests.  Let me know how I may support you.

Sugar Babies!
Beginning tomorrow, you will take on the loving sugar baby project.
However,  sugar babies are in a state of neglect.  The Sugar Baby Social Services  were called in to Stelly's and many of the babies have been carted away.
For tomorrow, please bring in a photo of yourself or another baby. You will become the "face" of the babies.  I will be picking up babies from the maternity ward tonight.

If you wish to avoid babies or have a terrible fear,  please read and summarise an article on child development.

Friday!

Feel free to make a mug of hot chocolate or tea but please finish quickly as you need to use the library resources. Make good use of your time today.

Child Development Assignment- In the library today.

If you are confused,  refer to Chapter 3 in your textbook .  It is quite straightforward and will give you a guideline for research.

Have your checklist ready for Tuesday.  Use the information that you gather for your brochure etc, to create a checklist.  It could be as simple as bullet- point comments that you can use to evaluate and observe our guest's behaviour.

If you have any games, art, music or snacks that you would like to bring in for Tuesday, please go ahead!

Send me an email if you have any questions, or any questions on your assignment.

You don't have to finish the assignment for homework but you do have some homework:

Read Chapter 3-  even though you will be a specialist in two areas of development,  it is a good idea to have an overview of child development

Finish your parent interviews and write up a summary.

Have you checklist ready for Tuesday.  I will try to find clip -boards but if you have clip-boards at home, please bring to class.

Hot of the press!
We will have a Forensic Psychologist visit our class on Thursday, April 17.
